March 31 "End of Term Hecticness"

My morning was nice and relaxed. A good night sleep, a longer than normal run, a smooth English class with everyone present (that doesn’t happen too often!)—including about 7 children under the age of 2 running around church. I guess they just wanted to learn with their mommies. J Lunch was productive: T and I continued planning for tomorrow’s teacher training. Wow, there is a lot of prep that needs to go into something the first time you do it! Yes, I know it will run smoothly, but being recent graduates ourselves, we’ve never trained anyone before! So, it’s taking us awhile to smooth everything out.
The afternoon was anything but smooth. So, 2 minutes before tutoring, the normal Thursday preschool teacher’s sister knocked on our door and said she’d be a bit late, could we cover for her. No big deal, except that T and I were supposed to have two tutoring groups at the time. So, thinking on our feet like all good teachers, I volunteered to cover preschool and T said she’d take both groups and work on addition chants until I returned. Well, “a little while” turned into 45 minutes of the 2 hours for preschool. And since I don’t have a key to the room, everything was done outside. It worked for awhile, but the kids wanted to know why we couldn’t go inside and learn…so cute. They were getting antsy and were having problems with things like holding hands and making a circle (because of course they all wanted to hold my hand), so I was glad when the teacher arrived. She came to tell me that she had a headache and wouldn’t be teaching this afternoon so I should continue; however, I told her I have the older kids to be teaching right now, so she, disappointedly, said just send the preschoolers home. So that’s what I did. Meanwhile, across the wall where T was, her tutoring group never came (exams) and mine was there, but she didn’t have my lesson plan, so she was filling time with other things. So then I had to rush an hour lesson into half an hour. Plus my second grade friend came 20 minutes early, so I had to find something for her to do, one of T’s girls who is switching times came an hour late so I had to integrate her into the group, and another girl who comes in the morning came, so I had to integrate her, too. T, meanwhile, was watching a movie of the novel she’s reading with M&M so everyone wanted to know why they couldn’t watch, too. At the end of the first session, everyone wanted to stay; I ended up having to send everyone home after addition chants with the second group, so A and R got some tutoring time and so M&M could hear the movie. Now, I love working with A and R, but I usually have them individually. Wow, do the dynamics change when they’re together! The nest vs. nast conundrum continued from yesterday, as well as other squabbles. Maybe it’s just the dynamics of a boy and girl together or maybe it’s because of exam week, but these kids could not sit still for anything today! I am definitely not pairing those two together again! And while all this is happening (as I find out later), the guy who followed me on my bike yesterday made it into the campus area and was looking for me again….definitely creepy. I’ll have to talk to the guards about that one….
So, after the hectic afternoon it was off to the movies (I am Number Four) and dinner (Ocean Basket) and the super market (we had no food but couldn’t buy everything because this store is expensive and the other one is closed because their workers are on strike!). That part of the evening was nice an relaxed. When we got home, T and I definitely had work to do, aka finish the handouts for tomorrow’s training session and figure out what we’re going to say. It was a late night….
